“How do we tell the truth and make the truth bearable?” DiCamillo asks. Her answer is stories. Stories can do this for us. The kids will be alright if they can read stories of characters who somehow find a way to make it through their sorrows.
How do we tell the truth and make the truth bearable? Emily Dickenson had this advice: "Tell the truth/But tell it aslant." The first and only time I've seen the word 'aslant', but it has stayed with me for 66 years, and I try to do it. And sometimes I succeed---to my benefit and the benefit of others.
To have the will to be fascinated by the world and full of wonder is to let your guard down. Kate's observation there feels really important at the moment when so many aspects of life carry an added weight.
This was an absolute perfect episode. Only problem? I could have listened for another hour or two! Thank you for finding the best in Kate’s heart. I will definitely listen to this again and again.

I have listened to the Kate DiCamillo and Mary Oliver interviews several times each.
Krista is a thoughtful interviewer. Her style and approach is appreciated in a time of brow beating and relentless rudeness.
I’m happy to see On Being here.

How to,read the transcript.
LOVE Kate Di Camillo. If I could live in any author’s world, it would be hers.
Is it possible to get a transcript. This moved me on so many levels.
The transcripts are usually on the On being website, on the episode page.
