Black writer and playwright Andrea Hairston, who is also a personal friend of mine, put this amazing sentence in her last book (not the new book out this month): "For wisdom, you need passion, faith, and doubt." I haven't stopped thinking about it in more than a year, and I thought this community might appreciate it.

One could also say, in place of "doubt" - curiosity.

Krista,

For me, On Being never left. So many voices, so much to contemplate, so often am I grateful. As Paul Simon sang, "Many are the times ..."

Holy Wisdom

I have been taught that the cave paintings in Lascaux

were depictions of the hunt, portraits

of early man’s survival; animal sacrifices

portrayed as both sustenance and sacrament—

much like the priests of my youth holding

up bread and wine, body and blood,

to show us the source of our salvation.

But many scholars believe it was the women

who did the wall paintings... women who wept

at the foot of the cross, a woman, the only believer,

who went to the tomb at the appointed time,

a woman who picked the fruit necessary to start

a species superior to angels because of sacrifice—

a woman, whose own body and blood, is the portal

through which all must pass to put on the image,

to mimic the likeness, to attempt to embody the wisdom

that was His from the beginning; the mind,

the soul, the vessel, that was his daily delight—

“…a pillar of cloud by day,

and a pillar of fire by night.”

This feels like what drew me to On Being all those years ago. As things do, it changed over time, and mostly that was ok. But the time came my needs diverged, and On Being no longer fit. I was happy to get the invitation to join this iteration. I missed the beautiful and complex flow of On Being, so here I am, looking forward to again meeting the people I need in my life.

Krista, welcome back. Just this week I googled on being, wondering where you were. So you’re right in sync and in your flow. Looking forward to hearing from you and your team on Substack. I recently started a Substack page and have been diving into the platform with curiosity and fun. Glad to share this space with you🥰 your program and conversations with your guests have carried me through, every time I listen, to a place of joy, love, hope, wisdom, beauty and faith. I’ve been listening for ever and am so grateful for voices like yours.
